The Restoration Works started at the end of August 2004 when the scaffolding
was erected around the Tower. The work was to have lasted approximately 3 months and consisted mainly of work to the outside of the tower.
A delay with the weather, amongst other things, lengthened the job to 6 months.
The cost to the church, however, remained the same. The roof tiles were
stripped, new felt laid and the tiles replaced. The guttering and down-pipes
were renewed and the drainage at the base of the tower improved. The
pointing to the outside of the tower was of sand and cement, a non porous
substance. This type of mortar doesn't allow the tower to 'breathe' moisture from its walls,
so this is why the tower was damp. This pointing was stripped off and
replaced with traditional lime mortar. Also, there were voids (pockets) in the
walls which allowed water to ingress and track down to the inside of the tower.
These were rebuilt or filled with grout. The porch was renovated, with new external doors and the window
feramenta (iron-work) reconditioned. The windows were blanked off while
they were taken away to be worked on. The poor stonework was renewed
and woodwork was stripped back and repainted. |
